High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)

10 Mar

In the past, I though the longer the cardio session the better…so untrue. While it is important for long distance runners (marathoner and half marathoner) to rack up the mileage for strength and endurance, for the average person, trying to lose fat and gain muscle, these long distance runs won’t get you the results you want. And they take up a lot of time!

Sure I enjoy a nice long run now and then to clear my head, or enjoy a nice spring day, but during the winter months I do NOT run out side. Cold and snow are my nemesis.  In New England it seems winter lingers for 7 out of the 12 month a year. Winter and I just don’t get along. The cold gets deep in to my bone. I get achy, chills and sore. My circulation is poor so my feet because blocks of ice and every step is painful. What am I to do?

Long runs on the treadmill are not an option for me either. I get bored out of my mind!

And then I discovered High Intensity Interval Training, or more commonly refered to as HIIT.

Here are some sites  discussing the pros and cons of HIIT and give examples of different HIIT workouts.:

This form of training helps you burn fat while building muscle in the shortest amount of time possible.

20 minutes and your done.

High intensity intervals consist of a very intense interval, followed by a lower intensity interval. This cycle is typically repeated for 10-20 minutes.

HIIT can be done outside or inside the gym, on the treadmill, elliptical, step-mill or bike.

Here is one of my favorite HIIT workouts:

On the treadmill:

Warm up 2

sprint all out 20 sec.

recover at a slow pace 40 sec.

repeat for 15 min

cool down for 2 min

Pizza Night!

30 May

Yesterday was a beautiful day. P-O double and I went for a nice long 7 mile run, the longest I have done in a while. My boyfriend has become quite the runner in the past several month. We use to go for runs and I would be moving along with ease, while he was huffing and puffing, cursing at me because he would be ready to finish and I would say “want to go a little further”. Recently he has grown to really enjoy running. On Monday he said to me, “I wonder if I could do 9 miles?” I said, “who are you and where is my boyfriend?” When it comes to running, he has used it as a form of exercise, but when he told me he wanted to run 9 miles, I knew that he had grown to love it, and even maybe, have a passion for it. On Monday he completed his 9 mile run and was surprised that he could do it. He was proud of himself and so was I.

I have to step up my game to keep up with him. Maybe a half marathon is in our future!

Later that day, we took Neo for a quick walk to get some fresh air. For some reason we were both craving pizza. (Pat always craves pizza, but for me it’s a rare occasion)

Since I have been trying to eat vegan, I wanted to get a pizza without cheese. I was nervous because I didn’t want the pizza people to think I was a weirdo, but it was my lucky day. We decided to order from Pearl Street Station, the pizzas are not typical greasy pizza parlour pizza, they are fresh and taste home-made. We pulled the menu up on- line, and to my surprise at the top it said, “Please specify no cheese orders”. Yeahh!!! So they have had no cheese pizzas orders before! I’m not going to be the first weirdo!

I ordered a small Garden Delight Pizza, and boy was it delightful. It was loaded with olives, mushrooms, red pepper, onions and basil. I did not miss the cheese at all! Soooo good!. I ‘ wait for leftovers! ( I had 3 slices!!!!)

Yucca Fries

27 May

So it only took me about a week to finally use the Yucca. Let me explain, the past few days have been ridiculously hot! We are on the 3rd floor of a 3 family house aka we live in the attic! Our thermostat goes to 90 degrees; it was hotter than that. That’s all I know. I lugged an old school AC up the 3 floors hoping for some relief, but it only cooled our bedroom to about 80F. Well, that better than 90+ right? So basically, my dinners have consisted of smoothies and ice water the past few days.

But tonight, the Veggie of the week was cooked: Yucca, Yucca fries!

I paired the fries with Chips, Kale chips. (Sounds like it’s a wicked “bad-for-you” dinner, but the fries are yucca and the chips are Kale!)

The Kale was fab as usual. The Yucca was surprising. When I was cutting it up, it seemed a little milky. I couldn’t picture how it could turn into fries. The final product was actually pretty good. They tasted like a mix between tortilla chips and french fries (I know! Weird combo, but that’s really what they taste like)

Overall, they are good, a little bland, but nothing a little more salt and oil can’t fix. My only complaint is there is kind of a strange after taste. Not bad, just different. It taste like it smells.

I will def try these again, and trick Pat into thinking they are home made french fries;)

Here’s how I made them:

I set the oven at 400, peeled and cut the yucca into fries, sprayed a pan, placed the yucca on the pan, sprayed again with olive oil spray, and sprinkled with salt.

I cooked them for about 20 minutes, flipped, then another 10-15 minutes.

Let cool for a few minutes and enjoy!

More about New Sneakers

11 Nov

I was so excited to get my new sneakers, but something just wasn’t right. The right one felt great, but my foot seemed to slide around in the left one. I was lacing them like they were hockey stakes to get them tight enough. I decide I should go back to the store and try a different size.

I went to Marathon Sport after my gym session so my feet were in “exercise form”. I was told that your feet expand when you exercise, so I thought I would find the best fit if my feet were in that state.

I  was pleased to find that the women working agreed with my suspicion that my sneakers were to big.

I tried a smaller, more snug size and a said, “they are a perfect fit!” I felt like Cinderella!

Apparently comfort is in the eye of the beholder. When I original bought my new sneakers, the man helping me had me try on a 6 1/2 and 7. He said the more room in the toe area the better. I have always worn 6 1/2, and they felt way better than the 7 so I went with them.

When I returned the sneakers, this worker told me they should be tighter, and I agree. I like the snug fit.

I am so glad that I listened to my feet and went for a smaller pair. And for that amount of money, they should fit like a glove!

Do you prefer a tight fit sneaker or a more roomy pair?

I was so excited, I went for a little jog down town, there seemed to be a lot of action on main street and I wanted to check it out. As I flew down main street in my new sneakers, the dark street soon lit up with ridiculously blinding lights, and people were just hanging out. I asked a woman what was going on, and she replied, (almost jumping up and down), “Ben Affleck is in that building, they are shooting a move! They are coming out at 10, we are waiting for them” ( It was only 7:30 at the time) I wasn’t going to hang out on the street for 3 hours to ketch a glimpse of him, but its is really cool that they are shooting a movie in this little town, and that Ben Affleck is like 1/4 mile from my house!

Old meets New

10 Nov

Finally! I got my new sneakers!!! I have been waiting and waiting for a new pair, and they are finally here.

Nike doesn’t make the older model anymore, so I had to find the closest fit, and this is what I found.

101_1100I decided on the Nike Zoom Vemero 3, how hot are they?

They are unbelievably sleek and comfortable.

I purchased my new kicks at Marathon Sport in Melrose. The man who helped me decide on my pick said these sneakers have the best cushioning, and he was right.

I ran yesterday like I haven’t run in a very very long time.

Lately running has been difficult for me. I get leg pain, my feet hurt and it just take a lot of effort to get out and go.

It’s funny how a pair of sneakers can re motivate me and help me get back into running.

I can’t wait to run again today.

Sneaker Dilemma

9 Sep

A few years ago I went to  http://www.marathonsports.com/, a sports store focused on finding you the best sneaker.  They work one on one with you,  watching your running style and determining your foot type.  After a little question and answer secession, POOFF…  my perfect sneakers were placed on my feet. When I put on those Nikes, nothing could stop me.  I could fly! It was like walking on air!

When my sneaks began showing wear and tear,  I found the same pair on Nike.com. I should have bought the whole stalk because the next time I needed sneakers, they had been discontinued:(.

Lucky after searching high and low for my beloved sneaks, I found them! On clearance at a Nike outlet! It was one of the luckiest days of my life. I was ecstatic!

So, I had my third and final pair of dream sneakers.

Since then I have gone through so many pairs I cant keep track. In one week I bought and returned about 10 pairs.

I gave up on my search for the perfect pair and settled for a pair that seemed conformable and had good support.

My boyfriend talked me it Asics. But I’m not feeling the love. I am a Nike girl at heart.

Unfortunately,  these sneakers are  just not cutting it.

I think I need to get refitted for my “Special Pair” and start a new love affair.

I am partial to Nikes.  Can one brand suit you better than another?
